Making emergency home adaptations easier

We are making it easier for disabled people to make adaptations to their home.

We have updated our Independent Living Policy to ensure Disabled Facilities Grants, money given to the Council by the government, can be spent without so much red tape, allowing people to remain independent and in their homes for longer.

The main change in the policy will now, in certain circumstances, allow us to use our discretion and provide funding under a certain threshold to help provide emergency alterations where time is of the essence.

This may include:

  • Emergency adaptations to people's homes to ensure a timely discharge from hospital
  • Changes to the home environment that help people with dementia and cognitive impairment to live safely in their own homes for longer
  • Grants to help with a move to more suitable accommodation

Another key change in the policy sees local business favoured for work where possible. This means that every pound of Council money spent is reinvested back into the local economy.
