Plymouth’s next Lord Mayor announces deputy

Lord Mayor Designate, Councillor Sue Dann, has announced that her deputy for 2022-23 will be Councillor Chris Penberthy.

The new Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor are due to be sworn in at the Council’s annual meeting in May, when Councillor Dann will take over from the current Lord Mayor Councillor Terri Beer and Councillor Penberthy from Councillor Maddie Bridgeman.

Councillor Penberthy was born in the Alexandra Maternity Home, Plymouth in 1964 and grew up in the Peverell area. He was educated at Montpelier Infants and Junior Schools and Devonport High School for Boys. He has spent most of his career working for charities and social enterprises and was awarded a fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts for his services whilst volunteering.

First elected to the City Council in 2011, Councillor Penberthy represents St Peter and the Waterfront ward. He currently sits on the Brexit, Infrastructure and Legislative Change Overview and Scrutiny Panel, as well as the Mount Edgcumbe Joint Committee. He is also the Chair for the Performance, Finance and Customer Focus Overview and Scrutiny Committee.Councillor Sue Dann and Councillor Chris Penberthy

In addition to his commitments within the Council, Councillor Penberthy is actively involved in a number of local community led groups including Plymouth Energy Community, Millfields Trust and the Hoe Neighbourhood Forum. In his spare time he enjoys visiting the theatre, galleries and local events. Whenever he gets the chance he also spends time with family and friends having a chat over a cuppa or drink and watches the world go by.

He is proud to say he is from a family that have called Plymouth home for generations and tries to show off the City whenever possible.

One of his closest friends Darren Hartley will be serving alongside him as Consort. Darren was born and bred in Plymouth, currently works for the Land Registry and is a keen local photographer and supporter of Plymouth’s cultural scene.

Councillor Penberthy said: “I am looking forward to supporting Councillor Sue Dann during her year as Lord Mayor. I am very proud of my home city and it will be a privilege to serve the people of Plymouth as Deputy Lord Mayor.”

Lord Mayor Designate Sue Dann said: “I am very pleased that Councillor Penberthy has agreed to be my Deputy Lord Mayor and I am sure that he will serve Plymouth well and be an asset to our fantastic city.”
