Our public Remembrance Sunday Service on Plymouth Hoe is not taking place today but a service pre-recorded at the Minster Church of St Andrew will be streamed online from 10.45am.
Residents are being asked to remember from home this year, with the city adapting its traditional commemorations to ensure everyone’s safety amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
Led by the Bishop of Plymouth, the Rt Reverend Nick McKinnel and attended by the Lord Mayor of Plymouth Councillor Chris Mavin, Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith, Leader of the Opposition Councillor Nick Kelly, Council Chief Executive Tracey Lee and Johnny Mercer MP (representing all Plymouth MPs), the service incorporates a two-minute silence at 11am.
Footage will also show the Lord Mayor, Johnny Mercer MP, Naval Base Commander Commodore Peter Coulson and representatives from the armed forces and Commonwealth War Graves Commission laying wreaths at the Royal Naval War Memorial.
The Lord Mayor said: “We are enormously proud of our military heritage in Plymouth and Remembrance Day is a very important date in our civic calendar, giving us all chance to reflect, remember and honour those who have lost their lives.
“While this year has thrown many challenges our way, we have safely marked the 75th anniversaries of VE Day and VJ Day and the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, and we will be doing the same this Remembrance Sunday.
“While we cannot all be together, we can still remember all those who gave so much and I’d invite you all to watch our remembrance service online and take part in the two-minute silence at 11am.”
The remembrance service will be streamed on our Facebook page and on our YouTube channel from 10.45am today (Sunday 8 November).
