Shout out for organisations to help train people for employment

Are you part of an organisation that could help get people back to work or retrain them to work in areas which need people to help the city get greener as we grow?

We are looking for training and support specialists that could help make a real difference to the lives of some of our residents who have been unable to work or who are looking to retrain.

The Council has been awarded £855,000 through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund to commission a range of support for local people to get back into the jobs market. The hope is that this funding will support up to three projects.

Council leader Tudor Evans said: “We are looking for projects that will give people enough confidence and skills to get into the job market. We declared a climate emergency in 2019 and pledged to make Plymouth carbon neutral by 2030.

“Plymouth’s green economy is going from strength to strength and we want more of our residents to be part of it.”

Our priorities for these projects will be:

  • Supporting Green Skills

Encouraging and supporting the take up of green skills in Plymouth will help future-proof and create greater opportunities for its citizens.

We are particularly interested in projects that increase awareness of the skills opportunities available in the green and net zero area. This could include provision for people who want to retrain. We are interested in projects that increase the uptake of both training and employment opportunities within the green sector and support individuals to learn more about the skills needed to enter into employment.

  • Pathways to Employment and Improve Digital Inclusion

Plymouth has almost 40,000 people currently economically inactive, with over half of these due to long-term sickness or caring responsibilities. However, there are also significantly high numbers of job vacancies across a wide number of sectors. Through breaking down barriers some individuals have, we hope to support them into employment.

We are interested in projects that support securing employment for individuals as a result of training and learning, and projects that support and encourage innovative ways of upskilling or retraining individuals to support people into employment, where people face additional barriers.

  • Supporting Local Skills Needs

Plymouth has persistently high numbers of job vacancies across a range of sectors, but overall unemployment levels have remained low following the pandemic and so we are seeing a tightening labour market. Plymouth needs additional skilled individuals to meet this demand. We are looking for projects that showcase employment opportunities by engaging with high value technical skills in defence and maritime sector and health and care.

We are particularly interested in projects that work around existing provision, filling gaps or attracting new entrants to the job market (first-time job-seekers or those re-orientating) and underrepresented groups.
