Spitting in street could now earn £100 FPN

Spitting. It's a pretty horrible habit.

It's anti-social, and in the current COVID-climate, it's pretty unhygienic, too.

That's why from now on, spitting in the street in Plymouth could land you with a bill for £100.

The move will be enforced by our environmental enforcement team who are already authorised to issue fixed penalty notices.

Anyone witnessed spitting will be issued with the notice, which if not paid, could result in a court summons.

Councillor Sally Haydon, Cabinet member for Customer Focus and Community Safety, explains:

"Spitting is one of the most dirty habits I can think of. There is absolutely no need for it and during a pandemic which thrives on particles from people to survive, it's just plain irresponsible.

"On top of that, it's anti-social. We want to promote a vibrant waterfront city. People spitting in the street does not fit with that image."

The Council will not be acting on reports of spitting at or on other people. This constitutes assault and is a police matter. We are only interested in people spitting in the street.

FPNs will not be served to under 18s and all of the revenue received will go into paying for the service, with surplus invested into infrastructure and equipment to help keep the city clean.
