Top honour for former councillors

Aldermen Jonathan Drean and George Wheeler receive civic scrolls and insignia from Lord Mayor and Deputy Lord Mayor

Four former councillors have been honoured for decades of public service in Plymouth.

Jonathan Drean and George Wheeler (pictured second from left and far left) were presented with civic scrolls and insignia today by the Lord Mayor, Councillor Mark Shayer and Deputy Lord Mayor, Kathy Watkin, after being enrolled as aldermen at an extraordinary general meeting of the Council last week.

The honour was also conferred upon former councillors Lynda Bowyer (who will be presented with her civic scroll and insignia in July) and Vivien Pengelly, who sadly passed away earlier this month.

The title honorary alderman or alderwoman is traditionally awarded to former members who have served as Lord Mayor or served at least 15 years for the Council (or both).
