Support for children with vision and sensory impairments

Plymouth Libraries provide a wide range of eBooks and eAudiobooks with accessibility features that can be altered for the personal needs of the reader.

A variety of organisations provide books with large print, braille, and audio material for children:

  • Access2Books is a charity that produces and publishes high quality early years’ books in dual format - giant print (75pt) & braille - with illustrations.
  • Bag Books provide multi-sensory books and storytelling resources for people with severe or profound and multiple learning disabilities. Their stories are told through voice and emotion rather than words and pictures.
  • BookTrust is the UK's largest children's reading charity and works closely with UK libraries. If you child is five or under, and you require either of the following packs: Bookstart Shine for children who are deaf or Bookstart Touch for children with vision impairment, please speak to a member of library staff.
  • Calibre Audio is a national charity who have been providing the latest audiobooks to children and adults for half a century. Anyone who finds reading a printed book difficult can apply to join and enjoy unlimited access to their collection.
  • ClearVision is a postal lending library of children’s books in print and braille, and tactile books.
  • Custom Eyes don’t believe a vision impairment should stop you, or your child, from knowing the joy of reading. They have over 4,200 large print books available and each one is custom made, with font size, spacing, colour and more all tailored to each child’s individual needs.
  • Living Paintings provide audio and tactile books for blind children and adults.
  • Listening Books is an audio book lending charity for those that find their illness, mental health, physical or learning disability affects their ability to read the printed word or hold a book.
  • RNIB Library is the largest library of its kind in the UK, and it's completely free, with over 60,000 items in the collection, which includes audio, braille, and 2,000 score in music braille
