Supporting people to live independently in their homes is one our key priorities, but there is currently a shortage of people to work in the home care sector market to help us achieve this.

Not only does working in home care allow you the flexibility to choose the hours that are right for you, it’s also one of the most rewarding jobs you can choose.

As a Home Care Assistant, you can make a real difference to the lives of vulnerable people in Plymouth, giving them the support they need to live independently in their own homes.

No specific qualifications or background in care is required to become a Home Care Assistant, what’s more important is that you have a natural calling to care for people. All care providers in Plymouth provide you with the full training and support you need to become one of our exceptional caring champions.

Free support for applicants

Free support for applicants will be provided through Skills Launchpad Plymouth, the city’s one-stop-shop for skills, training, education, careers and jobs.

We will offer you:

  • access to impartial careers information, advice and guidance
  • a 1:1 face to face skills assessment to identify your transferrable skills and values based behaviours to help you more confidently apply for jobs in care
  • help to prepare for interview in a care setting
  • the opportunity to gain entry level Care skills to build confidence
  • support for mental health and well-being
  • advice to overcome barriers to starting work including access to financial support for work clothing, initial travel to work costs as well as guidance on benefits calculations
  • access to ongoing training and skills development once you get started to continue up-skilling and developing your career in Care

For claimants: If there is a barrier to starting work and you need financial support, then please contact your Job centre Work coach to be considered for the Flexible support funding. This could be used for example to purchase work clothes, Photo ID, Full Birth certificates and initial travel to work costs. Childcare costs can be applied for when you are on DWP approved training courses however these must be OFSTED registered Childcare providers.

Offers of employment will be dependent upon interview, suitable references, completion of mandatory training and an enhanced DBS check. Individuals will be required to travel between various locations across the City.
