Commercial Wharf slipway

The slipway is free for public use and is best suited for the launching of sailing dinghies, canoes and small craft.

Cars may access the slipway for launching and recovery but this isn't recommended due to the steepness of the ramp.

Slipway information

  • Located at Barbican/Sutton Harbour (map grid reference SX 4829 5379)
  • 10 metres wide cobbled slipway
  • Provides access to the water at most states of the tide
  • At low water springs the slipway flattens out and becomes mud for a distance of approximately 30 metres (this only occurs when tides are at their very lowest)

How to get there

From Madeira Road access is available either from Commercial Wharf or the entrance to Elphinstone car park. From Commercial Wharf take a right turn at the end of the ramp although this is a pinch pint with narrow access.From Elphinstone car park from the end of the ramp take a sharp left turn and follow the road around to the top of the slipway.

Please note: the road from Elphinstone is narrow with bends and has limited overhead clearance due to overhanging trees.

Parking

A pay and display car park is available at Elphinstone car park.

Toilets

Public conveniences are located at the entrance to Elphinstone dinghy park.

Local facilities

There are various food and retail outlets located nearby in the Barbican.

Additional information

There are speed limits in the Sutton Channel of 4 knots and in the Cattewater of 8 knots. Boats must not make a wake until they are out of the Sound beyond the Mount Batten Breakwater.
