Food Businesses Information Gathering

Our Food Safety Team conducts hygiene inspections for businesses in the city that:

  • prepare
  • store
  • or distribute food

This includes items given away during promotions, donations, or charitable events.

Food includes:

  • drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic)
  • snacks like crisps and sweets
  • bottled or tinned products

Relevant food businesses are required to register with us. We inspect all new food businesses, the timing of initial inspections, follow-up visits, and other contact depends on a risk assessment process.

We regularly contact food businesses to keep our food safety records accurate and ensure that the risk level of your premises hasn't changed. If we contact you, you must provide specific information to help us determine whether any major changes have occurred in your operations.

If your business no longer handles food or drinks, tell us.

If your business is selected for review, we will send a questionnaire link to the contact person listed in our register. Complete the online questionnaire as thoroughly as possible.

If you have concerns about the questionnaire, submit your query via our online form:

We can help you comply with the law and can provide advice or guidance when needed. We recommend you first view the extensive resources available on the Food Standards Agency website where you may find answers to your queries quickly and conveniently. For advice specific to food packaging and information, the Food and Drink section of the Business Companion website, Food and drink | Business Companion, also provides comprehensive guidance.
