After our apprentices planted the orchard in Lakeside Drive in February 2015, we arranged for native wildflowers to be sown underneath the orchard to encourage native pollinators such as bees, hoverflies and butterflies to thrive. The wildflowers will also help the fruit trees to grow as grass would compete with the trees.
Native wildflowers include:
- Cornflower
- Corn marigold
- Poppy
- Ox-eye daisy
- Red campion
- White campion
We've already spotted lots of red-tailed bumblebees enjoying the cornflowers!
