The slipway is free for the public to use for the launching and recovery of most types of vessels, including those that are towed. Cars should not be left parked on the main slip.
- Located on the Mount Batten Peninsula (map grid reference SX 4884 5318)
- 15 metres wide public slipway
- Provides access to the water during most states of the tide
- Times with restricted access to the water are one hour either side of low water spring tides.
- The bottom of the slip is visible when the sea level drops to 1.3 metres above low water spring tides
As the slip has a relatively gentle slope vehicles may need to reverse into the water for launches in order for the vessel to draw enough draught to float from a trailer. This would make launching any vessels with fixed fin keels difficult. 1.5 metres from the end of the slip there is a ramp with an increased angle.
The slip can prove very popular, with congestion at peak times such as weekends and holiday periods.
How to get there
The slipway is located off of Lawrence Road on the Mount Batten Peninsula. At the roundabout by Haven Marina follow the road past the large hangar buildings on the right side of this road. When you reach the end of the hangars turn right, down the narrow road for approximately 50 metres and this will bring you to the top of the slipway.
There is a large public car park located on the seaward side of Lawrence Road and there is also limited on street parking.
Car parking is also available at the nearby Mount Batten Watersports and Activities Centre. The centre and car park are monitored by CCTV. Check with the centre for current charges and any parking restrictions.
Toilets are located at the Mountbatten car park on Lawrence Road, close at about 7.15pm in the summer and 4pm in the winter and provide:
- Disabled toilet
- Baby changing facilities
There is a speed limit in the Cattewater and boat owners must maintain a speed of below 8 knots and not make a wake until they are out of the Sound beyond the Mount Batten Breakwater.
