Update on Weston Mill recycling centre

Both Weston Mill and Chelson Meadow recycling centres were closed during the COIVID-19 lockdown, in line with Government instructions.

Chelson Meadow is our main household waste recycling facility and since we reopened it in May hundreds of people a day have been using it. We've had positive feedback about how the site is being safely managed with social distancing measures in place.

We are working hard to bring back our full range of services as quickly and safely as possible and are currently having to prioritise as we have fewer employees available due to a number needing to shield.

We are focusing our resources on our facility at Chelson Meadow, which is able to manage a large number of visitors and provide a wide range of recycling services.

Weston Mill recycling centre, which is a smaller site and therefore more difficult to operate with social distancing measures in place, remains closed while staff resources are focused on Chelson Meadow.

Councillor Sue Dann, Cabinet Member for Environment and Street Scene, said: “We know how much Weston Mill is valued by residents and appreciate their patience as we work to bring all services back. We’d ask people to continue to bear with us as we do our best to provide a full range of services as soon possible, while ensuring our customers and staff stay safe. We are keeping the situation under constant review and I want to thank residents for their understanding during these challenging times.

“We have been reintroducing more services at Chelson Meadow each week as appropriate safety measures are put in place and have recently allowed vans with permits to use the site. We will shortly have a full range of services operating there.

“We are also working hard to reintroduce garden waste collections across the city from next month.”

Chelson Meadow is open seven days a week, from 8am to 6pm.
