Oreston slipway

The slipway is free for public use for the launching and recovery of boats including those launched from trailers. Cars should not be left parked at the top of the slip.

Slipway information

  • Located at Oreston (map grid reference SX 4999 5356)
  • 12 metres wide public slipway
  • Provides access to the water during most states of the tide
  • Times with restricted access to the water are at low water spring tides due to the need to cross the bed of the estuary to reach the water

When launching it is best to keep to the main channel until you are into the Sound, 1.5km downstream, because at low water the Cattewater dries out in places nearer to land.

There is a speed limit in the Cattewater and boat owners must maintain a speed of below 8 knots and not make a wake until they are out of the Sound beyond the Mount Batten Breakwater.

How to get there

Heading out of the city, cross Laira Bridge and head to the roundabout by the supermarket on Billacombe Road and take the second exit. At the next roundabout take the third exit and head along Oreston Road. Continue until you reach the junction with Rollis Park Road and turn right down this road continuing until you reach the junction with The Quay. Turn right and head along The Quay and the slipway will be located on the left hand side beyond the car parking area.

Parking

There is a car park for up to 20 vehicles alongside the slipway and the Council maintains a secure small boat parking area close to the top of the slipway.

Toilets

There are no public toilets near the slipway.
