Plymouths' Quiet Neighbourhoods Connected Communities

Guiding Principles

Our ambition is to deliver quiet, connected, neighbourhoods not dominated by road traffic but instead places where walking, cycling and catching the bus are the natural travel choices.

It is an exciting time for Plymouth. The strategies set out in the Plymouth Plan allow for a re-thinking of how we prioritise travel through our residential communities and Plymouth’s declaration of a Climate Emergency provides an opportunity to make real changes to the physical look and feel of Plymouth’s streets and roads in a way that prioritises the likes of residents on bikes, children on scooters and of course pedestrians.

We’re looking to deliver safer streets, less congestion, better air quality, improved public health and wellbeing and an improved local environment.

We want our communities to be shaped around people, with walking or cycling the most popular choices for shorter everyday journeys. This will help people make healthy living choices and assist in delivering places that are happier, more inclusive and equal, and more prosperous.

To do this we are looking to develop some guiding principles to support the introduction of quiet, connected communities in Plymouth by establishing some guiding principles for changes to our neighbourhoods which we’ll look to introduce in the coming years. It applies to both existing neighbourhoods and new developments.

We want to make our residential streets better places for all, and particularly those people wanting to walk and cycle and who have additional needs.

We look forward to working with you to deliver quiet neighbourhoods and connected communities and hope you enjoy reading the following document.
