Phase 1 Southway Drive, paths to Durris Gardens and Yardley Gardens: Completed
Following consultation on improvements for pedestrians, cyclists and people with disabilities stretching from Southway to Plymbridge, construction started on the Southway section in March, 2020.
This phase also included substantial improvements to two paths connecting Miller Way with Plymbridge Road via Yardley Gardens and Durris Gardens.
These improvements are now completed except for the addition of direction signs for pedestrians and cyclists.
Phase 2 Plymbridge Road East
Work on improvements in this area started on 25 April, 2022, with the scheme expected to finish by January 2023.
The original consultation in January 2019 was followed by statutory consultation with on street notices posted on 3 March, 2021 along with press advertisements.
Following this valuable feedback, the designs for the improvements around Plymbridge Road have been finalised and approved for construction. The final scheme includes:
- Widening of the existing footway to provide a traffic free walking and cycling route on the south side of Plymbridge Road from Earls Wood Drive to the recently improved path connecting to Miller Way via Durris Gardens.
- Two new signalised crossing points, and two uncontrolled crossing points of Plymbridge Road for pedestrians and cyclists.
- Improved crossings for pedestrians and cyclists on Thornbury Road (East and West) and Bush Park.
- To improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists, additional lengths of double yellow lines on Plymbridge Road, just to the east of Wrigleys roundabout and Thornbury Road.
- Several dropped kerbs with tactile paving to help improve safety and access for people with mobility and/or visual impairments.
The reduction in the speed limit to 30 mph along much of the single carriageway section of the road between Westwood Avenue and a point approximately 150 m east of Darklake View will also be implemented as part of this phase of work.
To complete the work safely with the minimum of disruption, some of the phases of work will require the following traffic management:
- Lane closures along the dual carriageway section of Plymbridge Road, and on Wrigleys roundabout.
- Closure of alternate ends of Thornbury Road to ensure that access is maintained for businesses. Each closure will last for approximately three weeks and further information on the start and duration of these closures will be provided on advanced notice boards.
- Temporary traffic lights on the less busy section of Plymbridge Road to the south-east of Wrigleys roundabout.
- Temporary footway closures with pedestrian diversions which will be facilitated by the new crossing points which are being installed.
Delays are possible whilst the work is progressing, but we will do our best to keep this to a minimum. Advanced notice boards will be put in place to alert road users to these works.
Phase 2 drawings
Phase 3 Plymbridge Road West – currently not funded
The longer term plan is to deliver a continuation of the walking and cycling route to connect from this scheme to the existing facility opposite Glenfield Road so completing the route from the George Junction.
The council will continue to seek funding opportunities to deliver these further improvements.
