A vehicle might be abandoned if at least one of these apply:
- Unsecure (e.g. smashed windows)
- Lights broken
- Number plates, petrol cap or wheels missing
If the vehicle:
- is parked dangerously call the police on 101
- isn't abandoned and has no valid MOT report it to the police online
- is untaxed for more than 31 days contact the DVLA online
- has a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) but is on the road contact the DVLA online
Report an abandoned vehicle
Reporting an abandoned vehicle should take around 10 minutes. You will be asked:
- the condition of the vehicle
- vehicle details: (if not burnt out)
- the registration number of the vehicle (if the vehicle has a number plate)
- make and colour of the vehicle
- location of the vehicle and how long it has been parked there
- images of the front, side and back of vehicle
- your name and email address if you want to be kept up to date
What happens next
We will inspect the vehicle to find out if it is abandoned. If it is we will:
- contact the DVLA to try and find the current owner
- attach a notice to the vehicle advising the vehicle must be claimed
- remove the vehicle if not claimed within the notice period
- if the owner comes forward it is not classed as abandoned and we will not remove the vehicle
Caravans, trailers and boats
Caravans, trailers and/or boats that are not attached to a vehicle can be reported by using our online form:
