Promote your business FAQs

Answers to some of the questions you may have about promoting your business with us.

If your question isn't answered here you can contact us by emailing advertising@plymouth.gov.uk

Can I purchase multiple banners or signs?

Yes.  Discounts are available for multi-buys, please contact us for more information.

Is there a discount for extending the contract?

Yes, different discounts will apply depending on the type of asset you are advertising on.

Visit the page for the asset you are interested in to see the discount options.

Can I mix and match the type of asset I advertise on?

Yes. For example you can purchase 4 double lighting column banners and 1 roundabout sign to display your advert for a set period. We will provide a detailed quote for your requirements.

Why are there different lengths of contract on different assets?

Some assets cost more in terms of installing than others. To make sure the advertising package is affordable for you and us different lengths of contracts have been set.

What happens if the asset space I wish to purchase is already booked by someone else?

If you have a specific site in mind due to your business requirements and are happy to wait for the space to become available you would need to wait for the contract on that space to be concluded, in the case of banners this is 3 months unless the contract extension option was chosen by the purchaser.

Roundabout/verge signs are leased for 12 months at a time. We would be happy to let you know when the space will become available. If you are happy to consider other asset sites we will work with you to find one that fits your requirements.

Is design/artwork included in the price?

No, the design of your advert is not included in the advertised price. If you decide to take up the advertising opportunity you will be sent information including Plymouth City Council’s advertising policy and artwork specifications. This will give you information about the types of images you cannot use in your advert and details about the size and printing parameters. If you do not have access to a design partner to help you with this you can contract our design department. This service is charged additionally at £60 per hour (inclusive of VAT).

Can PCC design my advert?

PCC does have a graphics and printing department which can be used at an additional cost to you, however, we would recommend that you find your own supplier so that you can have direct contact with them. We can provide you with our advertising policy and artwork specifications to ensure that your design complies.

Why does my advert design have to be approved by PCC?

This is to ensure that it complies with our advertising policy. Additionally any advertising that is by a roadside will need to have a safety audit undertaken by our Highways department. This ensures that your advert is not a danger to passing drivers by confusing or distracting them.

Can you improve the resolution of my design?

No, once you have saved a design we are unable to alter the resolution of a file. You would need to re-design your artwork at a higher resolution to ensure that the resolution is adequate for printing.

Why do I need to sign a contract?

This is part of the terms and conditions of the agreement for advertising on our assets. It is to protect us and your business.

How soon can my advert be installed and seen by potential customers?

As soon as the design has been approved as complying with our advertising policy and is assessed as safe to install, you will be informed. We aim to have the final banner/sign installed within 10 working days of Plymouth City Council (PCC) receiving the banner/sign from the printers/customer.

How will I know when my advertisement is displayed?

A staff member from the highways will be in contact to let you know how the process is progressing at key points including when your advert is installed.

What if I don’t see any increase in business from my advert?

Whilst PCC are happy to provide the advertising space on a highly visible city asset we are unable to guarantee any outcomes for your business in terms of numbers of customers or additional income. However these assets are in very prominent places in the city and have the potential to be seen by upwards of 16,000 people on a regular basis.

Do I have to pay a deposit?

Yes, a 50% deposit must be paid upfront to secure the asset and order the printing of the advert for installation. The remaining 50% must be paid before installation of the advert

How do I make payment?

Payment can be taken over the phone or online. We accept most major debit and credit cards.

Does the price include VAT?

Yes

Can you reduce the price?

A discount will be applied if you decide to renew your contract over and above the initial term or if you buy 5 or more advertising spaces on assets. We cannot offer personalised discounts as our Council values are to be fair and transparent to all. If you feel that the prices are too expensive we would like to hear your feedback.
