Return / Switch to a Career in Social Work with Plymouth Children’s Social Work

  • Are you a qualified social worker who has taken a break from practicing?
  • Or have you been practicing as a social worker, but not in children’s statutory services?
  • Has your registration with SW England (formerly HCPC) lapsed – do you need work / developmental opportunities to support your re-registration?
  • Would you like to switch careers, and be supported to join an excellent career pathway with an authority that has a reputation for excellence in continuing professional development? An authority who will support you to get where you need to be with training and development and restorative supervision?

Plymouth City Council hosts the Academy of Social Work Plymouth, who deliver ongoing and bespoke packages of learning and development to support social workers practice at all stages of their career. The Academy sits within Professional Development Services, a dedicated service that reflects the commitment Plymouth City Council has had for ten years to promoting a culture of learning for best practice.

For applicants not currently registered as social workers

If you are a qualified social worker but have not been registered with the professional regulator for a while, Social Work England is the current regulator.  Please read their conditions for re-registration for further information.

If you have not practised as a social worker for more than two years, Social Work England will require you to provide evidence of getting your skills and knowledge up-to-date. You can do this through 30 days of formal study, private study or supervised practice.

If you have not practised as a social worker for more than five years, you will need to evidence 60 days of formal study, private study or supervised practice.

The Academy of Social Work can help provide you with development and shadowing opportunities to help you meet these targets, subject to discussion and agreement
