Coronavirus (COVID-19) and a Phased Return to School - June 2020

At CATERed, we have been working very closely with schools to understand how we can support them with the phased re-opening and return of pupils in some year groups from the beginning of June.

Each school is likely to be doing things slightly differently dependent on their individual circumstances and what will work best to ensure the safety of pupils and staff.

We know from talking with Headteachers and staff that the key to all of this will be flexibility and working together to meet the needs of pupils, instil confidence amongst families and staff and ensure safe working with all guidance and social distancing in place.

We hope we have been able to take some pressure off schools by being able to provide solutions for school food and catering for those pupils attending school and also for those of key workers and/or identified as vulnerable for educare.

To reassure staff, schools and families we are re-writing Risk Assessments, Work Instructions and Working Practises and appropriate and additional training and advice will be provided to staff for work, social distancing and “one way” systems will be introduced in kitchens.

From discussions with schools we have produced the attached menu offer for pupils attending school.

  1. A reduced choice 3-week cyclic menu for hot food.  The choices have been reduced to allow safe working, better ordering and stock management and an assessment of need and what can safely be managed as schools re-open.

Some schools have decided to offer just one of these menus, others both, and this will have been based on how the service can best operate based on individual schools and staff availability. In all decisions, safe working and the safety of pupils and staff has been the deciding factor.

You should check communications from your school regarding the offer in your child’s school.

School lunches will be available for FSM (Free School Meals) eligible pupils attending school, pupils in Foundation and Year 1 who are entitled to UIFSM (Universal Infant Free School Meals) and also to all pupils wishing to purchase a meal plus those pupils in school for educare.

CATERed will also continue to supply Weekly Food Parcels (or daily grab bags where requested) for those FSM eligible pupils at home and not yet able to attend school.

At All Saints Academy Plymouth the menu will be updated regularly, pupils can obtain the daily choices from the school

If you have any questions about the menu choices or allergens please telephone your child’s school and ask to speak with Catering Manager or contact us at catering@catered.org.uk.

Meal prices

From 1 September 2018 the price of a school meal in Plymouth is:

  • Infant, Junior Primary  - £2.20
  • Secondary - £2.50

The price of our school lunch has once again been held recognising the current economic climate; with the service offering excellent value for money and being amongst the lowest priced in the region comparing very favourably with other authorities and providers across the south west.

The price of a school meal in Plymouth is:

  • Infant, junior, primary and special schools - £2.20 (the price includes a main course, dessert and fruit drink, milk or water).
  • Secondary schools and academies - £2.50 (the price includes a main course and dessert (the meal of the day) which meets the food-based and nutrient-based standards).

To avoid disadvantaging or discriminating against any pupil or student, the available free school meal (for those registered as eligible) and the paid meal (the meal of the day) should both be available at the same value (£2.50).

A cafeteria style service is operated in secondary schools so parents/carers and students should consider that if items are selected other than the meal of the day then the total cost of the selected meal could be different to the above price.
