Scott of the Antartic resources

Museum Collections

A small but unique and important collection of items from the ‘Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration’ will be part of the permanent collection at The Box, previously at Plymouth Museum and Art Gallery. The most recent acquisition is Scott’s Christening Cup, purchased with the help of grant aid from the V&A Purchase Grant Fund and the Heritage Lottery. A previous purchase commemorates Scott’s death. It is a fairly rare ‘In Memoriam’ photograph folder, originally issued to all those involved with the Terra Nova Expedition.

Scott's skis are one of the best loved exhibits. Although they originally belonged to Scott, they were used by Patrick Keohane and it was Patrick who gifted them to the city.

Other items in the city collection are largely acquired from Scott expedition members. These include the photographs accompanying these web pages. Fred Dailey, Thomas Vere Hodgson, Francis Davies, Patrick Keohane and Fred Parsons all had strong links to Plymouth.

Plymouth’s Antarctic Connections

‘From Plymouth to Pole: Plymouth’s Antarctic Connections’ is an information leaflet funded by the Heritage Lottery. It celebrates Scott as local man and national hero, but also highlights other local individuals and locations associated with the ‘Heroic Age’. Just as importantly, the leaflet celebrates the City’s acquisition of the Scott’s Christening Cup - an important new legacy of Captain Scott.

From Plymouth to Pole audio files

Thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund, we have been able to record and present fifteen ‘From Plymouth to Pole’ audios files. They are also available here:
