The 2021 Awards

Every three years Plymouth City Council hosts the awards to celebrate the role of groups, architects, designers and building companies in shaping the city.

The awards, which are named after the architect responsible for the plan to rebuild Plymouth after the Blitz, takes a look at a huge range of work from small conversions and projects to transform open spaces to multi-million pound housing or business projects.

Award categories

  • Best conversion or conservation project (sponsored by Go South West)
  • Best smaller development (sponsored by Stride Treglown)
  • Best commercial project (sponsored by Devon and Plymouth Chamber of Commerce)
  • Best new housing development (sponsored by LDA Design)
  • Best new building (sponsored by Cattedown Regeneration Limited)
  • Best public space (sponsored by Devon and Cornwall Police)
  • Best natural infrastructure project (sponsored by SWH)
  • Best community project (sponsored by SWH)
  • Best response to the climate emergency (sponsored by Rentplus)

The following three awards are in addition to the categories above but aren't nominated by the public:

  • Judges Special Award – recognises a Plymouth Planning project that has contributed most to the city since the awards began, this award is decided by the judges (sponsored by Persimmon)
  • People of Plymouth Award - shortlisted by suggestions from the public (sponsored by Plymouth Community Homes)
  • Abercrombie Award – recognises the best overall Plymouth planning project, this award isn't nominated by the public, it is picked from the schemes nominated through the rest of the categories (sponsored by Plymouth Community Homes)

Best public space

  • Winner: The Box Public Realm
  • Commended: Quadrant Quay, Millbay

Best natural infrastructure project

  • Winner: Central Park Hub
  • Highly commended: Teats Hill
  • Commended: Plymouth Tree Challenge

Best community project

  • Winner: Delamere Road Pocket Park, Eggbuckland
  • Commended: Star Park, (previously known as Valley Park)

Best response to the climate emergency

  • Winner: Future Plymouth 2030
  • Highly commended: Millbay Boulevard
  • Commended: Primrose Park
