Plymouth's brand new crematorium has hit a significant construction milestone with the steel frame for the main building beginning to take shape.
February 2024 - Foundation stone laid
The Park, Plymouth’s brand new crematorium, has hit its latest significant construction milestone.
Located off Haye Road in Plympton, The Park has designs inspired by the landscape, where the buildings will nestle into the slope of the site.
With the just a few months until building work finishes, representatives from the Council and construction partner Kier gathered to lay a foundation stone that will be placed outside the entrance to one of the new Ceremony Rooms.
It marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Council’s Bereavement Service who will move to the site when construction finishes this Summer.

November 2022 - Major construction milestone
Over the past week, many tonnes of steel have arrived at the site off Merafield Road, on the eastern side of the city. The steel was supplied from local Devon fabricators and is now being lifted into place.
It follows months of work on site by contractors Kier with roads and car parks now in place and the groundworks for the main building nearly complete.

March 2021 - Ground is broken
The journey to our brand new crematorium has taken another exciting step forward after ground was broken for the first time on Tuesday, kick-starting the main build of the £16 million project that will see Plymouth’s aging crematoria at Weston Mill and Efford replaced with a state-of-the-art, modern facility.
Although contractors Kier Group have been on site for a number of weeks, Tuesday marked the first time they have physically had spades in the ground.
We'll keep you posted on the build, with work expected to be completed by Summer 2022.
November 2020 - Work begins
Work on Plymouth’s new crematorium will begin later this month.
Spades will be in the ground at the 17-acre site on the eastern edge of the city, off Merafield Road near the Stag Lodge entrance to Saltram Park, within the next few weeks, after the Kier Group were appointed as construction contractors for the project.
Kier, who have been integral to the success of the award-winning Oceansgate project, were chosen after a competitive tender process with several other internationally renowned organisations.

November 2019 - Final consultation event
A final consultation event took place with the industry including Funeral Directors, Clergy and Celebrants seeking their views on the detailed design for the scheme.
October 2019 - Cremator provider confirmed
We are pleased to announce that Facultatieve Technologies have been appointed as the cremator equipment provider for the new facility.
July 2019 - Site for new Crematorium secured
Land acquisition for the new crematorium has been completed. Securing the site for the new development is another key milestone towards progressing the provision of the new crematorium.
April 2019 - Planning Permission granted
The approval of the Planning Permission for the project marks a major milestone for the scheme. Work now continues on progressing the detailed design ahead of appointment of a contractor later in the summer ahead of works starting on site later in 2019.
December 2018 - Planning application submitted
The planning application for our brand new crematorium has been submitted.
Following months of consultation and design work, a application was submitted on Friday.
October 2018 - Pre-planning consultation event
This public consultation event revealed the detailed designs and how they have been developed following consultation feedback.
This event allowed residents to view the designs and feedback further before a Planning Application is submitted later in the year
August 2018 - Consultation commences
Public consultation events took place in the Council House, Plympton and Plymstock library. Events at Weston Mill and Efford Cemeteries also gave the public an opportunity to go behind the curtain with our staff
A number of consultation events were also held with the funeral industry, enabling them to share their practical experience and knowledge.
July 2018 - Plans for a new crematorium are announced
Funding to deliver a brand new, state-of-the-art crematorium has been approved by Plymouth City Council.
Nearly £12m will be spent on a new 17 acre site on the eastern edge of the city, off Merafield Road near the Stag Lodge entrance to Saltram Park.
