Local Government Pension Scheme

Pensions

Plymouth City Council provides 3 Occupational Pension Schemes for its employees.

The pension scheme you are eligible to join depends on the type of work you do. The majority of Plymouth City Council employees are eligible for the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS). If you are not eligible for either the Teachers Pensions Scheme (TPS) or the NHS Pension Scheme (NHSPS) you will be eligible for the LGPS.

If you are a Teacher, you are eligible for the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS).

If you TUPE transferred to Plymouth City Council from Public Health, you are eligible for the NHS Pension Scheme (NHSPS).  If you have been recruited to one of the roles that TUPE transferred and meet certain criteria, you may also be eligible for the NHSPS.

The LGPS, TPS, and NHSPS all provide comprehensive websites about the respective schemes including:

  • How to join the scheme
  • How your pension is worked out
  • How much you contribute
  • How you can opt out of the scheme
  • How you can claim a refund of contributions if you are eligible
  • How you can get an estimate of your benefits
  • How you can increase your benefits
  • For the LGPS, how you can change to paying lower contribution

The State Pension is a regular payment from the Government that most people can claim when they reach State Pension age. It is based on your National Insurance contributions. Comprehensive information about the State Pension including checking your State Pension age, calculating your State Pension and claiming your State Pension can be found on the gov.uk website.
