11-plus examination for school entry in September 2021

Information Update - 11-plus testing for entry in September 2021

In light of the government's announcement on Sunday 1 November 2020 in regards to the national lockdown, due to schools not closing there has been no change to the 11 plus examinations. The 11 plus examinations arranged will continue to be held on the 7 November 2020 and the 14 November 2020.

If the situation changes we will update parents via email.

11-plus mock testing

It is with great regret that due to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) restrictions, Devonport High School for Girls and Plymouth High School for Girls will not be holding practice 11-plus examinations in Plymouth this year.  It is our hope that the 11-plus examination will still go ahead in September 2020. If you have any further queries please feel free to contact the School Admissions Team on 01752 307469.

Grammar school admissions

Grammar school places (Devonport High School for Boys, Devonport High School for Girls and Plymouth High School for Girls) are allocated according to proven ability in the 11-plus examination.

Only candidates who have registered and sat the 11-plus examination at the required time and who have submitted an application for a school place by Saturday 31 October 2020 will be included in the first allocation round notified on Monday 1 March 2021. It's anticipated that all grammar school places will be filled in the first allocation round. Generally, candidates who either apply late or who take the 11-plus examination later won't be included in the first allocation round.

For 2021 entry, all three grammar schools in Plymouth will be using Maths and English examination papers supplied by GL Assessment. Maths and English is taught in all schools and as such, the local authority does not advocate tutoring for the 11-plus. Free practice papers are available on the GL Assessment website for parents who would like to familiarise their children with the multiple-choice layout of the test, content and examples of some types of questions they will face.

You need to register your child to take the 11-plus examination.

The Online registration will be available from Monday 20 April 2020.

Register for 11+

Due to the on going Coronavirus (Covid-19) restrictions you will not need to provide the two passport type photographs of your daughter.

Note: We need to have received the registration form by 5pm on Friday 28 August. Late receipts will not be included in the first allocation round.

If you're applying after the registration has closed, email schooladmissions@plymouth.gov.uk or call 01752 307469 for advice (school admissions staff are available from 11am to 3pm).

Note: 11-plus Familiarisation Update

Due to the current school closure it is unlikely that DHSB will be able to run the 11-plus Familiarisation Session on Saturday 6 June 2020 as planned.

However, the school hopes to provide an opportunity, before the actual 11-plus tests, for boys to attend a session when they will sit an English comprehension and composition paper and a Maths paper, both set by the school. If the school is unable to provide a session before the 11-plus tests then they will send new familiarisation materials (Maths and English) to those who have expressed an interest, to use at home.

Please complete the Google Form to express your interest in this session (date and time of the session is to be confirmed) and to receive further information.

Register direct with Devonport High School for Boys between Monday 20 April and Friday 28 August 2020. If you're applying after the registration has closed, contact the school direct.

The 11-plus examination

The 11-plus examination takes place over two Saturdays on 7 and 14 November 2020. You'll receive a letter telling you the time and location nearer to the examination date.

The results

Results will be sent out on Monday 7 December 2020.

The results of the examination don't confirm that a place will be offered.

Offer letters will be issued on the offer date of Monday 1 March 2021. Only at this stage will you know if your child has been successful in gaining a place.
