An effective safer recruitment and employment policy and procedure is one which is regularly reviewed, written and updated in line with local and national guidance.

An effective safer recruitment and employment policy includes:

  • a recruitment statement;
  • information on job descriptions and specification;
  • requirements for suitability checks;
  • advertising processes;
  • application, shortlisting and interview processes;
  • trial and probationary procedures;
  • induction, supervision and appraisal procedures;
  • on-going employment checks;
  • the role of effective recruitment in protecting children;
  • equality of opportunities;
  • data protection.

Those involved with the recruitment and employment of staff must have received appropriate safer recruitment training, the substance of which should at a minimum cover the content in part three in Keeping children safe in education (GOV.UK).
