When you need planning permission

Most building works or changes of use of land or buildings will require planning permission. However there are a wide range of developments that do not require planning permission (called permitted development). It is important to check before you start any work as the rules on what needs planning permission do change.

Visit the Planning Portal for further information and advice on planning permission. The interactive house is particularly useful and should be able to tell you if planning permission is required.

If you are still unsure if you need planning permission, you can book a face-to-face meeting at Ballard House (£53 for one hour) with a planning officer to discuss your proposal. They can advise if planning permission is required and guide you through the application process.

Email planningconsents@plymouth.gov.uk or call 01752 304366 for more information and to book an appointment.

We also offer a development enquiry service for pre-application advice and information.
